ScandaList: Katy Perry – the Part-time “Tranny”?

Katy Perry is at it again, proving once and for all that she deserves a permanent spot on this website's ScandaList. "But why?" you might be asking yourself. After all, she did write that Christina Aguilera knock-off to Beautiful - er, I mean, that positive, life-affirming "gay anthem" Firework. Perry's questionable song choices aside (You're So Gay, for one), there's a very strong chance you might not be aware of the many faux pas she's made with regard to the trans community. I'm referring to her most recent June 22nd interview with Rolling Stone, where she's actually quoted saying, "You can’t be a full tranny every day of the week. That’s an exaggerated part of my personality.” The quote's referring to her "eccentric" style and stage presence (have you ever heard Gaga refer to herself by that word? No.) but don't go looking for it in the online version - the offending phrase has been scrubbed clean. If you can grab your own copy of the print version, turn to page 74 and you'll see what I'm talking about. Perry has successfully exploited and abused the LGBTQ community more times than she's kissed a girl and liked it, but I can't say that I'm surprised ...

BornLikeThis Reviews BornThisWay

Looking back, one can almost trace the development of BornLikeThis along with the progress of Lady Gaga’s Born This Way era. When we first started posting, she was gearing up to release her similarly named first single that would take the world by storm. Since then, we’ve been there for the release of the crazy sci-fi video, her cancellation of her deal with Target for the chain’s anti-LGBT practices, and the Glee episode in her song’s honor. Finally, the most anticipated, hyped album release of 2011, an album that was, we have to assume, largely created with Gaga’s LGBT fans and supporters in mind, has arrived. While Gaga is many things to many people, modesty has never been her strong suit. In the months leading up to May 23, 2011, she relentlessly hyped her sophomore effort, calling it “the greatest album of the decade.” The underwhelming response to the first two singles, however, had critics already anticipating her downfall. Despite its admirable message (when’s the last time a song with the word “transgender” was a radio hit? Um, never), Born This Way was overwhelmingly written off as a cheesy Madonna clone. Second single Judas offered a haunting dance beat and ...

Britney debuts new single “Till The World Ends”

Pop culture had quite a week as Britney Spears kicked off promotion for her highly-anticipated album Femme Fatale. Earlier this week, the pop icon's cover for V Magazine, her first American cover in over a year, hit the media. The shoot, shot by the legendary Mario Testino, features Britney in multiple colored photos wearing high-fashion garments by Givenchy, Ralph Lauren, and more. In the interview she revealed that she's over her past obstacles and that "the bitch is back and better than ever". What greater validation but the release of her new single Till The World Ends?! The single, produced by the always infectious team Max Martin & Dr. Luke (with additional production by an amazing newcomer Billboard) is another dance floor stomper. Britney took some time out of her day Friday to visit Ryan Seacrest and formally premiere the euphoric single, after it leaked online on Thursday. In the single Spears sings about dancing until the world ends, and the song itself makes sure that we do. Continuing the elements of dubstep (not as prevelant as Hold It Against Me) the song assures us that the upcoming album will be nothing short than an epic dance affair. While at Seacrest, she ...
