Queer Street Art December 1st, 2011
Queer Street Art

Having lived in the urban jungle that is New York, street art was commonplace throughout the city. Graffiti, stencils, murals, and stickers litter alleyways, streetlamp posts, and rooftops. Artists like Shepard Fairey, who made the iconic Obama "Hope" graphic in 2008, are respected for their craft. Street art originally came about as a result of political protest or unrest - so it's no surprise that there are queer street artists amongst the ranks of Banksy and Os Gemeos. One city that has gotten recent attention for its queer street artists is none other than San Francisco. With the city's queer history it is no surprise there is a potent concentration of artists within the city. The folks over at Queerty and GayCities have recently put the spotlight on various gritty artworks from San Franciscans and I suggest you head over to the sites for a look.

Zachary Quinto Comes Out October 17th, 2011
Zachary Quinto Comes Out

As an avid twitter follower, I found it rather odd that Zachary Quinto was a trending topic. Then I found the flurry of supportive tweets from fellow gay celebrities such as Ricky Martin. A Google search later and I found out the big news, Zachary Quinto announced he was a "gay man". The actor, known for his role as Spock in the 2009 reboot of "Star Trek", came out rather non-nonchalantly in an interview with New York Magazine. The actor made the bold statement when he was discussing his role in an Off-Broadway re-staging of "Angels in America". Unfamiliar with the play? To put it lightly it's an epic centered around the AIDS outbreak within the New York City gay community in the mid 1980's and its affect on several individuals. Quinto described the role as "the most challenging thing I've ever done as an actor and the most rewarding". He went on to state "as a gay man, it still made me feel like there's still much work to be done". So the big question is what caused the actor to suddenly be open about his sexuality? Well he answered that question himself on a blog post on his ...

Living Out Loud: Eduardo Lipe October 11th, 2011
Living Out Loud: Eduardo Lipe

I wanted to make my coming out story a bit different. Instead of writing I decided to record my story for all of you to hear. Now when I began to record my story I went on for much longer than I expected. If you look below you will see a graphic which represents a timeline that corresponds with my story. If you hover over it little dots should appear, and if you hover over them you'll be able to play my story. If you want the short form I suggest you hover over the last dot ("Coming Out Finale") over to the right. If you want to listen to it in it's entirety, I would suggest you go from left to right. Coming out is hard process for all of us, in my case it was an extremely difficult and draining experience. Find out why below:

Art Imitating Life: Archies Comics’ Gay Character To Become A War Vet October 7th, 2011
Art Imitating Life: Archies Comics’ Gay Character To Become A War Vet

Over a year ago Archie Comics introduced it's very first gay character, Kevin Keller. When Archie readers first met Kevin he was an army brat who was an aspiring journalist with dreams of joining the Army - just as his dad did. The results of this bold addition? The issue (Veronica #202) sold out resulting in the company's first issue reprint. The character is scheduled to pop up in the upcoming issue Life With Archie #16 in which readers will get a view of the cast's possible futures. What's in store for Kevin? He will be a married war veteran! Expect to see Lt. Kevin Keller getting married to his physical therapist. Looks like the writers were inspired by the recent DADT repeal and achievement of marriage equality in NY State. Another reason to applaud this story line is that Keller's marriage will be an interracial one. Now the big question in mind is whether or not this will cause a ruckus in Riverdale? As the CEO Jon Goldwater puts it: "“Riverdale is a place where you are socially accepted. We don’t make any political statements around here.” Bravo to the writers over at Archie Comics for creating such a ...

Rihanna Debuts “We Found Love” September 23rd, 2011
Rihanna Debuts “We Found Love”

Did you hear? Rihanna is releasing a new album this fall. Yes you heard me right, another album! It seems like she released her last album close to a year ago...oh wait she did. Since Rihanna grabbed the world's attention in 2007 with her breakthrough album Good Girl Gone Bad she's made sure not to let go. Her follow-up to LOUD is expected to drop November 21st this year - although if you're a fellow pop guru you know it'll be online a week or two before that. The Barbadian pop diva unleashed her new single "We Found Love" via a social media campaign where she got her over 45M Facebook fans and 7M Twitter followers to unlock the song to radio and iTunes. The single itself is a continuation of the slick euro-pop sound she introduced with "Only Girl". The song, produced by superstar DJ Calvin Harris, kicks off with a catchy 90's House piano riff as Rihanna sings about finding that special person we all hope to find one day. The euphoric dance track is sure to fill dance floors everywhere and with it's current position at #3 on the iTunes charts it's sure to be another Top ...

VMA’s Preview August 26th, 2011
VMA’s Preview

The 28th Annual VMA's will be taking place this Sunday at Los Angeles' Nokia Theater. The award show has always been a highlight of the year for pop fanatics. The biggest names in music come together under one roof to, well, go crazy. The award show has always been remembered for its outrageous moments. I mean who could forget Micheal Jackson's surprise appearance during NYSNC's 2001 performance, Gaga's bloody performance and meat dress, Kanye storming the stage in 2008, and the various iconic moments delivered by pop princess Britney Spears. I have to admit in recent years the VMAs have lost a bit of its former glory. Years of mediocre performances and bland hosts plagued the awards show resulting in a huge ratings dip. Last year, the award show saw a big turnaround breaking the 10M audience mark for the first time in six years. So what's in store this year? Although the performer roster is smaller than previous year expect the highlights to be: Gaga, Beyonce, and Adele. Another major reason to watch this year would be a tribute to Britney Spears. Although the network has been fairly quiet on what the tribute will entail expect a grandiose spectacle. ...

Gaga unleashes “Yoü and I” August 19th, 2011
Gaga unleashes “Yoü and I”

The big news on the pop landscape this week was the release (and premature leak) of Gaga's new video. Taking a complete 180 from the simplistic (and rather boring) video for "The Edge of Glory", the new video has Gaga doing what she does best  - be outrageous. In the clip for the fourth single off of Born This Way, Gaga dons a couple of different hats: herself, a mermaid, a bride, and her male drag character Jo. The video, shot in Nebraska, features a lot of the complex metaphors that Gaga loves to throw into her videos. Although the song itself is about her former flame, Luc Carl, she made sure the video had a more universal message behind it. In an interview with MTV yesterday Gaga explained and tried to decipher the video for us: "For me, it was all about capturing the true spirit of song, which is when you're in love, you'll be willing to walk and do the craziest and most inconvenient things you can possibly imagine. The video is quite complex in the way that the story is told, and it's meant to be slightly linear and slightly twisted and confusing, ...

Concert Review: The Femme Fatale Tour August 12th, 2011
Concert Review: The Femme Fatale Tour

After seeing the "Circus" tour in 2009 I had my own worries about the show. Although the show itself was a triumph, the only sore spot at times was Britney herself. I'm happy to report that isn't the case this time. The show's spectacle is on par with Britney's showmanship and energy. The theme of the show is, you guessed it, a femme fatale. Britney is on the run from a man that has his eyes set on capturing her, but the catch is she isn't just on the run she's out to get him as well. In the opening video the pop icon, gun in hand, runs through alleys and streets until cops finally catch up with her setting the stage for the show opener, Hold It Against Me. The first section of the show was enjoyable as she followed with fan favorite Up 'N Down, Piece of Me, and her #1 hit 3. One of the defining moments of the show was the revival of Gimme More. It marks the first time she's performed the song since the infamous 2007 performance and what a rendition it is. Let's just say Britney pulls off a great modern day Cleopatra in ...

We’re Soaking Up The Sun! August 5th, 2011
We’re Soaking Up The Sun!

Happy Friday!  Summer time is all about fun. We hit up beaches, amusement parks, and more to indulge in some well deserved downtime. Some of the cornerstones of the summer are the pop culture bits of it. That song the radio just won't stop playing or that blockbuster movie everyone has to see. As we hit the last month of summer we thought it would be great to give you guys a little fun feature on the team. Want to find out what songs we love (and hate) and what movies kept us on the edge of our seats? I suggest, you read on. Joe Picini So what's your song of the summer? My Moon My Man by Feist. I know it isn't the traditional power ballad/peppy song that most people would associate with Summer, but its been really good for me. I just really enjoy the tempo and its good for a chill night. Electric Chapel from GaGa is also one that I'm loving on right now. What song brings back great memories from a previous summer? As much as I am morally opposed to Katy Perry (see her ScandaList post for reasons) her past album really was the soundtrack ...
