Rally in Newark Today – Stop the Deportation! May 6th, 2011
Rally in Newark Today – Stop the Deportation!

If you can get over to the Newark courthouse today, Josh and Henry face a deportation hearing, there is a rally to stop this unjust deportation. For more info see the Facebook page.  Josh and Henry's case today is a very big deal as the Attorney General issued a statement yesterday "vacating" a deportation in New Jersey.  From the Get Equal Press Release: On Friday, LGBT organizations from across the country will rally behind a gay bi-national couple who will endure deportation hearings, facing the stark reality of living under the Defense of Marriage Act. In the shadow of the Statue of Liberty, GetEQUAL working with a host of other LGBT organizations -- including Stop the Deportations, All Out, Courage Campaign, Garden State Equality, Immigration Equality Action Fund, Marriage Equality USA, Out4Immigration, Princeton Equality Project, and Queer Rising -- to make clear that these deportations of LGBT spouses must stop immediately. The rally outside the Newark Federal Courthouse is taking place as Josh Vandiver of Colorado and Henry Velandia of Venezuela face deportation hearings before the court. Despite legally marrying in Connecticut in August 2010, Vandiver (a Ph.D. student at Princeton University) and Velandia (a salsa dancer, instructor, and founder of a Princeton-based dance studio) are facing a ...

Marriage and Citizenship – DOMA Near its End? March 31st, 2011
Marriage and Citizenship – DOMA Near its End?

You never know who you are going to fall in love with.  In the US, a land of opportunity there are millions of people from all over the world living here.  Imagine meeting someone at your school that is studying in the US from Colombia.  You find him attractive, he is athletic, and you love his accent.  Dating quickly turns into a loving relationship. Hanging over your relationship is a deadline, the day that his visa expires.  This deadline is months away, you try to “keep your distance” to not let the relationship go to far, because you want to protect yourself from getting hurt.  But you fail at keeping your distance; you fall madly in love with him.  As the date of his expiring visa approaches, you find yourself deeply in love; you don’t want this person to leave.  However, on the date the visa expires your boyfriend is here illegally – he has to move back to Colombia or face being deported by the US Government (and if deported he could not return to the US for 10 years). If you were a straight couple, you would have the option of getting married.  The second a straight couple is married – the ...

How Can You Tell if You’re Depressed? February 4th, 2011
How Can You Tell if You’re Depressed?

1. A big change in the way you eat: you either don’t feel like eating at all, or you chow down way more than you need to. 2. Having a tough time falling asleep at night, or feeling like there’s no real reason to get up in the morning. 3. Getting blunted or wasted more than before. 4. Skipping out on classes. 5. Ditching your old friends for new ones. 6. Feeling bummed out and tired. 7. Just feeling like shit: stomachaches and headaches all the time. If you’re feeling down, it’s important to talk to someone. Find someone safe, like a close friend or a counselor at the school. If you’re really down, call the Trevor Project at 866-488-7386.

How Do You Know if Your Friends are Depressed? January 30th, 2011
How Do You Know if Your Friends are Depressed?

Do you think one of your friends might be depressed, look out for these signs: 1. Feeling sad and worthless all the time. 2. Always pissed off at other people. 3. Crying a lot. 4. Chilling alone, instead of hanging with friends. Won't leave the house. 5. Dropping things they used to really like. 6. Never really gets psyched about anything, just kind of bored and dull. 7. Tired, sore, and sick all the time. 8. Really easily upset when someone disses them. 9. Hanging with different peeps. No longer interested in hanging with you. If your friend is showing any of these signs, they might be depressed. Stay on the lookout for signs that they might be considering suicide. Go ahead and talk to them about it, trying to be open and honest and understanding. Step up and be the best friend that you can be. If they’re really down, get them on the phone with the Trevor Project at 866-488-7386.
